NEW DELHI: Even if someone has already dealt with cancer, they must remain vigilant in terms of prevention as in fact, cancer patients are much more at risk of contracting an infection or getting a recurrence of the same cancer or other types of cancer. So, they need to be more cautious. Try implementing the healthy suggestions by experts to help yourself cope with the side effects of cancer treatment and lower your risk of cancer recurrence. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Satish Kumar, Consultant Hematologist and Hemato Oncologist at Manipal Hospital in Yeshwanthpur, recommended the following tips one must follow to avoid cancer recurrence 1. Quit smoking: Smoking after cancer treatment can increase the risk of cancer recurrence and reduce the chances of successful treatment. Tobacco smoke contains more than 70 carcinogenic substances, many of which can cause DNA damage and contribute to the development of cancer. Additionally, smoking can reduce the effectiveness of cancer treatments. Quitting smoking is one of the best things one can do for their health after cancer treatment, and it can improve the chances of recovery and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence. 2. Stop or limit alcohol intake: Alcohol consumption may increase the chance of cancer recurrence.

According to studies, cancer survivors who drink more frequently have a higher risk of death and recurrence. Heavy drinking can weaken the immune system and lead to nutritional deficiencies, which can make cancer treatment more challenging. If there is a history of cancer, it s best to limit alcohol intake or avoid it altogether 3. Reduce weight and avoid obesity: It has been conclusively proven that being overweight or having a sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of certain malignancies and chances of recurrence after treatment. Maintaining a healthy weight through regular physical activity and a balanced diet can help lower the risk of developing cancer. 4. Exercise: Regular exercise helps with fatigue symptoms, lowers stress, and has long term benefits for overall health. Individuals who routinely exercised had a greater ten year survival rate than patients who did not. Regular exercise will prevent risk of developing diabetes or heart issues in cancer survivors since they are at a higher risk of same. It is recommended to engage in moderate exercise for at least 3 5 hours per week or 30 minutes of aerobic exercise for 3 days a week and resistance training twice a week. 5. Diet: Dietary intakes have been linked to outcomes in some cancers.

It is recommended to avoid red meat and processed foods rather than take a plant based diet fruit and vegetable based diet , as it contains fibre, minerals and phytochemicals that can fight cancer.
